Not at this time. We send donated items to military basic training locations, to the care of the specific installation's point of contact for injured recruits' medical rehabilitation units. Drill Instructors and a unit's Commanding Officer have discretion over allowing recruits access to all items. Often, movies and music CD's are used as good behavior rewards for injured recruits or used to fill down time during the day. Books are often stored in a community library of sorts and are returned after use.
Please see the link at top of webpage for items and guidelines.
Depending on the situation, items may be immediately given back to donor, donated to local charities (Friends of the Ascension Parish Library, Purple Cow, etc.), or may have to be disposed of depending on the damage an item(s) may have.
We inventory items because we want to make sure that we don't send duplicated items to the same locations. An up to date inventory also helps us stay organized, track what items go where, and helps ensure that we meet our goals for each location. Also, some locations require detailed forms of what is being sent for approval before actually shipping the items. We have created and maintained a detailed inventory since starting this venture.
We have sent items to the United States Marine Corps Parris Island and San Diego, the United States Army (Ft. Leonard Wood) and to the Navy (Great Lakes). Other military locations will be selected based upon volume, duplicate items, need of items, etc. Some items take longer to ship due to various procedures and approvals needed prior to shipping.
